What are the “spheres” of hydrology?
Atmosphere. Biosphere, Lithosphere, and Hydrosphere
What does sovereignty mean?
The ability to govern themselves
What is a city-state? Give and example
A city that is an independent state with some surrounding territory. Ex. Singapore
What is a nation-state? What continent has a lot of these?
When a nationality and a state share the same boundaries. Europe has a lot of nation-states
Muntinational states vs Multienthnic states
Which one is more stable?
Multinational states have multiple nationalities in a state (Yugoslavia), and multiethnic states have many ethnicities (USA)
Multiethnic states are more stable than multinational states
What is a colony?
Territory that is legally attached to a country, not completely independent
What do these classifications of govt mean?
a. Democracy
b. Autocracy
c. Anocracy
a. citizens can elect representatives and run for office
b. according to interests of a ruler
c. a mix of the two types
unitary vs federal states
which works better for a big state?
Unitary= A state with one central government
Federal= gives power to local officials
federal works better for a bog state because it can create more specific laws for the citizens
What makes states in Africa fragile?
Superimposed boundaries placed by Europeans that leave some states landlocked and the boundaries do not align with preexisting tribal boundaries
What are some examples of a physical state boundary?
What are some examples of a cultural state boundary- geometric vs ethnic
Physical= ocean, river, desert, mountain
Cultural:
geometric= lines on a map
ethnic= language and ethnicity
