Chapter 1 Review 2022 Flashcards
Concentration vs Density
Concentration is like the extent of it over space, is it clustered or dispersed. Density is the frequency, m/v. amount / land area
What are the two types of diffusion and three subgroups?
Expansion and Relocation are the two types, and the three types of expansion are stimulus, contagious, and hierarchical
What is cultural ecology?
the study of how humans and the environment interact
What is cultural landscape?
Evidence of human activity on the earth
What is Distance Decay?
An inverse relationship, something is less common the farther from its hearth you go.
Environmental Determinism vs Possibilism?
Environmental Determinism is when the environment limits what humans can do, and Possibilism is the idea that humans can overcome this.
What are the three types of regions? Describe them.
Functional- around a node. (like ordering a pizza) Formal- a state or city or something boundary and Vernacular- also known as perceptual like the South
GIS vs GPS
GIS is a computer system that analyzes geographic data, GPS like tells you where you are
What are the three ways to measure geographic density?
Physiological- #of ppl/ arable land, Agricultual- #of farmers/ arable land, arithmetic -#of ppl/ total land
Remote Sensing vs Field work
Remote sensing is a long distance method to capture data but field work is like at the site
What are the three ways to display map scale?
Fractional (1:10), verbal (one inch is 24 miles) , graphic bar (little picture)
What are the 5 types of data maps? Also know what they look like
Choropleth, Isoline, Dot Distribution, Graduated Symbol, and Cartogram.
What are the five themes of Geog.?
Location, Place, Region, Movement, and Human-Environment Interaction
What are the three pillars of sustainability? describe them
Environment- (does it help) Economy- (do the benefits outweigh the costs) and Society (will people engage)
What are the two types of location?
Absolute (coordinates) vs Relative (situation)
