Chapter 8- Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
what muscle is the alimentary canal made up of?
smooth muscle
what are examples of connective tissue?
bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments
three types of muscle and their control
skeletal = voluntary cardiac = involuntary smooth = involuntary
define extensibility
ability to be stretched
define elasticity
ability to its original length after being stretched
define contractibility
ability for muscles to contract
structure of skeletal muscle
muscles held together by muscle bundles. each muscle bundle is held together by perimysium which allows adjacent bundles to slide across each other as they contract.
sheaths of epimysium also hold the bundles together. epimysium tapers off towards the end of the muscles, forming tendons.
perimysium and epimysium are both connective tissues.
structure of skeletal muscle fibres
a muscle bundle is composed of muscle cells, called muscle fibres, that lie parallel to each other and is an elongated cylinder with many nuclei.
around the muscle fibre is a thin, transparent plasma membrane called the sarcolemma which contains cytoplasm, called the sarcoplasm.
