Clear liquid diet used for…
GI disorder, post-operatively
-primarily to prevent dehydration and relieve thirst (consist of water and carbohydrates)
examples of clear liquids
water, tea, coffee, broth, clear juices, jello, ginger ale, carbonated beverages
full liquid diets
- transition from clear liquid to soft diet
- more nutritional support amounts of energy and nutrients
full liquid diets examples
clear liquids (above) plus milk, pudding, soups, ice cream, sherbet, fruit juice, vegetable juice
soft diet
- transition from full liquid to regular diet
- contain whole foods that are low in fibers, lightly seasoned, nad easily digested
foods you CANT consume with soft diet
no raw fruits/ veggies, no foods that cause gas (ex/ beans), no coarse breads or cereals
pureed diet
-consist of liquids and foods that are pureed to liquid form
when is pureed diet used?
oral/facial surgery, wired jaws, chewing difficulties
mechanical soft diet
those that require minimum chewing (ground meat, cooked veggies, canned fruit)
when is mechanical soft diet needed?
chewing difficulties, no teeth (edentulous), dysphagia
dysphagia diet- level 1
( pureed) foods with pudding like texture
dysphagia diet- level 2
(mechanically altered) moist, semi-solid foods with soft texture
dysphagia diet- level 3
moist, near-normal texture foods.
-No hard, sticky, crusty foods
liquid consistencies- thin
all beverages, no restrictions
liquid consistencies- nectar thick
heavy syrup consistency, can drink through straw (ex/ cream soup, thin, milkshake)
