Chapter 8 - Mass Movements Flashcards
What is known as mass wasting/mass movements?
A phenomena whereby geological materials are moved downward, commonly downslope, from one place to another.
What is shearing stress?
Stress that tends to cause parts of objects to slide past each other.
What is shear strength?
It is the ability to resist being torn apart along a plane by shearing stress.
What is the angle of repose?
It is the maximum slope angle at which a solid material is stable.
Where are quick clays most common?
In northern polar latitudes
How is rock flour produced?
Through the grinding and pulverizing action of massive glaciers.
What is a fall?
It is a free-falling action in which the moving material is not always in contact with the ground below. (rockfalls)
What is known as talus?
The coarse rubble that accumulates at the foot of a slope prone to rockfalls.
What happens in a slide?
A fairly cohesive unit of rock or soil slips downward along a clearly defined surface or plane.
What happens in a flow?
The material moved is not coherent but moves in a more chaotic, disorganized fashion, with mixing of particles within the flowing mass. (debris avalanche or debris flow)
