Chapter 8 - Make It Stick Flashcards
What is retrieval practice?
Retrieval practice is self-quizzing. Retrieving knowledge and skill from memory.
How should you use retrieval practice as a study strategy?
Ask yourself:
- What are the key ideas?
- What terms or ideas are new to me?
- How do I define the ideas?
- How doe the ideas relate to what I already know?
What is spaced-out retrieval practice?
It means studying information more than once but leaving a considerable gap between sessions.
What is elaboration?
Elaboration is finding additional layers of meaning in the material by relating it to what you already know, by explaining it to someone in your own words, or explaining how it relates to your life outside of class.
What is generation?
Generation is the act of trying to answer a question or solve the problem before being shown the solution.
What is reflection?
Reflection is taking a few minutes to review what you’ve learned by asking yourself:
- What went well?
- What could have gone better?
- What other knowledge or experiences does it remind you of?
What is calibration?
Calibration is the act of aligning your judgements with objective feedback.
