Chapter 8 - Ancient Greece Flashcards
Peninsula
An area of land surrounded on 3 sides by water - like Greece.
Travel in Greece
Travel was difficult in Greece because of the mountains and the seas. This kept people apart which is why they had “city-state” governments.
Polis
A greek word for City-State which is an independent government of a group of people.
Athenian Revolution
First time that there was Democracy in the world.
500 B.C. When Cleisthenes overthrew the aristocratic (all rich people) government. He wrote a new constitution.
Representative Democracy
Like the US. People elect a group of people to make the decisions that the government has to make like laws and taxes.
Pericles
Greek leader who taught people to be proud of their city and active in their government.
Homer
Greek poet who wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey.
How did the Greek civilization affect our life today?
Our government is modeled after the Ancient Greek Democracy. We use references to Mythology in our life (movies like Thor), and use old Greek language as some of our English words.
