Types of ceiling panels

Flush - sit on ceiling grid flange; do not have finished edges bc their edges are hidden
9 varieties of ceiling systems

Flooring installation best practices
Subfloor
Categories of flooring materials
1) Textile - materials that can be woven
2) Resilient - has some give under load or impact, recovers from weight and impact and makes flooring less tiring to leg muscles; linoleum, cork, rubber, vinyl tile
3) Hard - usually masonry materials
4) Wood - oak is most popular bc of durability and reasonable cost
Types of vinyl tile
1) Backed - bonded to a backing material
2) Homogenous - consists of materials mixed into doug, heated and cooled and cut into tiles
Advantages of terrazzo flooring
Combines durability of marble with the strength and economy if concrete; attractive appearance, east maintenance
Distinction between carpet fibers
Natural (cotton, wool) vs. Synthetic (nylon, polyester).Syntheic is most common due to lower cost and improved characteristics
Acrylic is long wearing
Nylon has good stain resistance and no longer fosters a significant static electricity condition
Olefins are suitable for outdoors (not absorbent and do not fade)
Polyesters have abrasion resistance and luxurious feel, but are not easy to keep clean
Rayons are the cheapest and crappiest.
Benefits of loop-pile carpets
The shorter the pile and the closer the rows of yarn, the better the carpet wears
Carpet installation methods
1) loose laid - only area rugs with finished edges
2) stretched and tacked - employs prefabricated plywood strips with rows of tacks
3) glued down - most popular for commercial carpet
Direct Glue down carpet installation approaches
Latex adhesive is applied directly to sub-floor and rolled with a weighted roller to remove air pockets and ensure adhesion. Important to apply seam sealer to all cut edges to avoid unraveling. Double glue-down entails gluing a pad to the subfloor and then to the carpet to the pad
