Chapter 4 Flashcards
How do loads on buildings differ, and what types if loads are often considered during design?
Dead loads are permanent loads (architectural conctruction, mechanical equipment, utility installations, sprinkler systems) vs. Live loads are temporary (snow, occupants, furnishings)
What are the effects of the three stresses on a member of a building foundation?
Tensile Stress - The stress that leads to expansion where volume and/or length tends to increase Compressive Stress - Stress that is applied to materials, resulting in compaction, or decrease in volume; applied to bars and columns leads to shortening. Shear Stress - The slipping tendency along a plane cause by parallel but opposite forces applied to the two sides of a plane.
