Chapter 7 Flashcards
Functions of interior walls
1) Separating and defining spaces
2) Controlling sound
3) Containing heat
4) Resisting fire
5) Bearing loads
Advantages of metal framing
1) Lightweight
2) Uniform dimensions
3) Noncombustible
4) Resistant to moisture and rot
5) Easy to construct
6) Does not twist/keeps its shape
7) Has prepunched holes
8) Is a pre-engineered system
Types of gypsum board products
1) Predecorated wallboard
2) Insulating wallboard
3) Fire resistant (x type) wallboard
4) Water resistant (type w/r) wallboard or green board
5) Gypsum sheathing
6) Gypsum lath
Uses of glass-fiber-reinforced gypsum
Used to create the special architectural shapes formerly produced by the ornamental plasters of the past
What are the 3 elements of paints and coatings?
1) Pigment - provides the color
2) Solvent - Thins the paint by dissolving or dispersing the binder
3) Binder - The glue that combines the pigment and solvents and allows for surface adhesion
What is the most important phase in the painting process and why?
Surface preparation. Produces a smooth, clean, hard and dry surface that enables the paint to bond. Otherwise, you risk cracking, peeling, and flaking.
Purpose of steel coatings
Used to protect steel against corrosion.; inhibit rusting
Paint failures
1) Improper paint formulations
2) Substandard materials
3) Inadequate surface prep
What is autoignition and how does it occur?
Fire without an ignition source. Oil dries by oxidation and gives off heat
What types of wall coverings are used in buildings for decorative finishes, and which is the most durable and easy to maintain?
1) wallpaper
2) vinyl - most durable and easiest to maintain
3) fabric and textured
4) wall panels
