What happened in the Chicago Freedom Movement (1966)?
First MLK North Campaign. 1st rally on June 10th. 30,000 turn up instead of 100,000. Heat wave so b used fire hydrants to cool. Mayor turns off and police reinforce causing a riot. King target seg housing and march through all white streets. Gage Park March, violence erupts and 1000 police can’t even control it. Jesse Jackson argues for more marches. Violence leads to negotiations and Chicago real estate board promise fair housing but is ignored.

Outlawed discrimination in housing either sale or rent. Limited impact as govt had no new powers to reinforce.
What effect did Eisenhowers Civil Rights Act of 1957 and 1960 have?
Focused on voting rights but failed small fine if you prevented it and both acts only increased voter registration by 3%. By 1963, 800,000 out of 20 mil in south could vote. Filibuster of 24 hours 18 mins for 1957 CRA.
