Chapter 8- Flashcards
What happens
Poole asks Utterson to come with him at once. They suspect Hyde has murdered Jekyll. They break down the door and see Hyde’s body on the floor and a letter from Jekyll.
“Foul…”
*Poole and Utterson (usually controlled and rational) have a strong reaction- “Foul play!”
“Pale…”/“the wind…”
Weather/setting increases tension somewhere- “Pale moon”/“the wind made talking difficult”/“the thin trees in the garden were lashing themselves along the railing”
- ‘lashing’: violence
- ‘themselves along the railing’: pathetic fallacy (foreshadowing)
“Hysterical…”
Servants reaction when Utterson is let in-“hysterical whimpering”-tension increases
‘Hysterical’- can not control crying/fear. (Link to gothic conventions)
What is Utterson’s behaviour like?
Utterson’s nervous behaviour- start contrast to what seen previously.
“Do you…”
Utterson and Poole- tension builds again-“Do you know Poole..that you and I are about the place ourselves in a position of some peril?”
‘Peril’- danger
“Ah, that’s”
Utterson with axe at the door. “Ah, that’s not Jekyll’s voice-It’s Hyde’s”- tension highest at this point
“Right in the…”
“Right in the midst there lay a body of a man sorely contorting and still twitching…”
‘Body’- Hyde
‘Sorely contorting’- painful transforming
‘Contorting’- changing (looks abnormal)
‘Twitching’- Just died
