Meaning of ‘infinite sadness’
-Context: majority of people still believed in religion, but started to question. Jekyll’s sadness will never end as he is in hell.
Meaning of ‘disconsolate sadness’
- He can’t be helped, no one can make him feel better. Not even the serums he is taking. No one can help him.
- Metaphor: He is trapped in Hyde, as he takes over Jekyll. Imprisoned by Hyde.
The meaning of ‘the smile was struck out …’
-‘Struck’ violence- Hyde taking over.
Meaning of ‘froze the very blood’
-metaphor: hyperbolic: taking fear to the highest point. Exaggerated- frozen blood- warm-gives life
Meaning of ‘they were both pale …’
- pale links to sickness
- reputation/respectability- men of this social status had to maintain appearances
- facade of responsibility
