Chapter 2- Search for Mr Hyde Flashcards
How does Lanyon describe Jekyll?
“Began to go wrong, wrong in mind”/“unscientific balderdash”
Links to him experimenting with his experiments
Links to supernatural and witchcraft, if they couldn’t explain it with religion, they blamed the supernatural.
“Balderdash”- Nonsense
“Unscientific”- Going against his profession
Link to social expectations- Lanyon didn’t want to associate himself with someone who isn’t proud of what they do, seen as offensive.
The Victorian era- Loved the tyrant and dual-nature.
“Shrank back with a hissing”/“snarled aloud into a savage laugh”
“Shrank” Suggests he wants to disappears
“Hissing” Animalistic behaviour (s sound suggests hissing and could bring on potential fear of this character as he is being aggressive. Me Hyde could be scared of people, doesn’t want to admit this secret)
“Snarled” Suggests aggression
“Savage” Aggressive, Violence, Lack of civilisation- links to supernatural. “Laugh” Has pleasure from it, sinister- suggests the pleasure he took from being violent/aggressive
The ‘s’ sound is sibilance- repetition of ‘s’
“Pale and dwarfish”/“deformity”
“Dwarfish” and “deformity”- emphasises his size even more.
“Pale”- Doesn’t go out, keeps this secret away.
“Satan’s signature upon a face”- The devil has approved of Hyde, evil enough to be labelled as being a spawn of the devil. Satan owns Hyde.
