Adequacy Appeals to authority
Authority must be identified
Must be recognized by experts in the field
The particulate authority must be in. Field the expert has knowledge
There should be a consensus among the experts in the field regarding the particular matter in support of which the authority is cited
Appeals to anecdotal evidence
Just because a friend was Robbed while on vacation in Honduras doesn’t mean that the whole country is unsafe to visit
Argument from authority (ad vercundiam)
This is appeals to unqualified authority
This is a fallacy of weak induction
Other issues relevant to appeals to authority
Citing an authority in on field in an argument that is not part of their field.
Other authority issues
Citing biased authority even if they have relevant credentials
Argument from authority
An idea that is true just because authority days so
9/10 doctors agree (but what kinda/ who are the doctors?)
Argument from force (ad baculum)
This is argument. With a stick
Bullying someone to agree with you
Appeal to pity (ad misericordiam)
Playing on sympathy of others to get them to agree with you?
Red herring
Using and argument to get you off track
Poisoning the well
Put your advisary in a position where they can’t agree or disagree with you
What is a slippery slope?
Fallacy he we make the mistake of thinking that if we take one step along a certain path then nothing can stop us from sliding into inevitable ruin.
The fallacy of accident
From what is true generally to what is true only in a certain respect
Missing the point
This occurs when the premise of an arguement supports something that misses the point
What is adequacy
A matter of degree
Can be more or less
Appeal to ignorance
When the premises of an argument states that nothing has been proved.
