Chapter 8 Flashcards
Interiorscape Pests and Problems
The _______ environment usually places extra stress on ornamental plants, making them more susceptible to injury by insects, mites and diseases. ______ plantscapes may contain several dozen types of plants and the environment can provide a wide range of growing conditions. All plants originated outside. _______ conditions may not be adequate for healthy plant growth. Also, humans are usually in close proximity to interiorscapes, therefore, special care must be taken in applying pesticides
Indoor
It is important to recognize symptoms of stress and their causes. For instance, brown or scorched leaf tips may be caused by poor root health (caused by overwatering, dry soil or excessive fertilizers or other soluble salts in the soil), low humidity, specific nutrient toxicities or pesticide or mechanical injury. Most plan injury can be caused by one of several factors or a combination of them. _________ factors that most commly affect indoor plants include low-light conditions, fluctuating and too low temperatures and ry relative humidity. The most common improper management practices include over- or under watering and improper fertilization. Before assuming that a plant problem is caused by a disease or insect, one should first determine if an environmental or management factor or a combination of these factors is the cause
Environment
Because there are very few sources of plant diseases in healthy interior plantscape, the best way to avoid disease problems is to use only _________ ___ _____ when constructing a plantscape or when replacing plants. Once plants are established, one should not worry about diseases affecting healthy plants. For example, many fungal diseases don’t develop because air indoors is less humid and less water is splashed upon interiorscape plants.
disease-free plants
Many of the diseases that affect ornamental plants in the outdoor environment can also affect plants indoors. But they may be less severe. This is particularly true for ________ diseases affecting above-soil parts that usually thrive in warm, humid conditions. Mismanagement by over-watering, heavy fertilization and/or poor sanitary conditions, however, can encourage ______ diseases affecting lower stems and roots, such as stem and crown rots. Problems with root rot diseases, even if they are present, are avoidable if the potting medium is properly irrigated, drained and fertilized. Plant -parasitic nematodes can be a problem, but as in the outdoor environment, their presence is only determined by assaying the plant roots and/or the potting medium
