Chapter 8 Flashcards
Antigen
Compounds, usually proteins, which can trigger the immune system to respond in various ways, including antibody protection.
Antibody
Proteins produced by animals in response to antigens and which react specifically with the antigen that induced their function.
B-cell
Lymphocytes that give rise to plasma cells that produce antibodies against foreign material.
T-cell
Type of lymphocytes that mature in the thymus. They play a role in specific immunity.
Class 1 marker
Group of proteins produced by a set of genes called the major histocompatibility complex and found on the membranes of all cells except red blood cells. It is one of the ‘self’ proteins of an individual.
Class 2 marker
Group of proteins produced by a set of genes called the major histocompatibility complex and found on the membranes of T-cells, B-cells and some macrophages. It is one of the ‘self’ proteins of an individual.
Histamine
Chemical released by cells at a site of injury.
Helper T cells
Class of T-cells whose activities include stimulating B-cells to produce specific antibodies.
