Chapter 8 Flashcards
mobile wallet
debit/credit cards in your phone.
wireless
electromagnetic waves rather than wire or cable carries signal between communicating devices.
mobile computing
real-time, wireless connection between a mobile device and other computing environments, such as the internet or an intranet. Basically using the phones various functions.
Mobile Commerce
(m-commerce) e-commerce activities conducted through mobile device.
persuasive computing
(Ubiquitous computing) devices have processing power with wireless or wired connections to a global network
ubiquitous computing
(Pervasive computing) devices have processing power with wireless or wired connections to a global network
What are the key advantages of wireless devices?
1) small and easy to carry/wear,
2) they have sufficient computing power to perform productive tasks,
3) communicate wirelessly with the internet and other devices.
microwave transmissions
systems transmit data via electromagnetic waves. High-volume, long distance, line of sight communication. Easily disrupted by weather.
line of sight communications
transmitter and receiver must be in view of each other.
satellite transmission
use communication satellites (GEO, LEO, and MEO)
satellite footprint
the area of the earth’s surface covered by a satellite transmission
broadcast
satellites transmit signals to many receivers at one time.
propagation delay
quarter second delay to send and return signals (ie lag in telephone communication)
global positioning system
GPS, uses MEO satellites to enable users to determine their position anywhere on the earth.
radio transmission
radio-frequencies to send data directly between transmitters and receivers.
