chief of state
executive agreement
an agreement between the President of the United States and the head of another country
executive privilege
the claim by presidents of their right to refuse to hand over information requested by Congress
White House Staff
the people who most immediately surround the president.
they act as personal advisors; they advise the president on what to say, when to say it, what to do, who to meet, and when.
the president’s Chief of Staff coordinates this group, which includes people like speech writers, press and appointment secretaries, and political advisers
they do not require Senate confirmation
Executive Office of the Presidency (E.O.P.)
act as policy advisors to the president
they advise the president on what policies to pursue and propse and assist with management of the federal bureaucracy.
This group includes economic advisers, legislative advisers, and domestic and foreign policy advisers, among others.
They do not require Senate confirmation.
The Cabinet
The Cabinet’s role is to advise the President on any subject he may require relating to the duties of each member’s respective office.
it includes the Vice president and the heads of 15 executive departments–the Secretaries of Agriculture, commerce, defense, education, energy, health and human services, homeland security, housing and urban development, interior, labor, state, transportation, treasury, and veterans affairs, as well as the Attorney General
patronage
the support or financial aid that someone or something gives to another
it can also refer to th power to give out jobs, contracts, or favors
agenda setting
President gives the State of the Union Address which tells the American people what he plans to do that year while in office
veto
the power of one person or body to prohibit a course of action chosen by another
the president can veto legislation, congress can veto the president
commander-in-chief
a military leader who has supreme command of a country’s armed forces
the president is the commander in chief
War Powers Resolution
law that limits the president’s power to send U.S. troops into battle without Congress’s approval
