6
Q

reactive criminal justice

A
  • only deals with crimes that have already been committed - after the fact
  • our current system
  • does not reduce crime or deal with the root causes of crime
  • politicians usually take a reactive stance during elections

7
Q

proactive criminal justice

A
  • dealing with crimes that are likely to occur in the near future based on past crime data
  • still reactive but tries to do it better and quicker
  • It won’t reduce the underlying social causes of crime
  • E.g. going into an area at a specific date and time because the last couple of years of data show that these areas always seem to light with crimes at these specific dates and times
  • E.g. police officers waiting in an alley where they know drugs are often sold, and either arresting the seller once he has been observed selling drugs or providing a different violation (like a warning for loitering) to deter any further illegal activity.

Q

preventative criminal justice

A
  • probably the most ideal approach to crime as it mitigates the potential for victimization, traumatization, and drain of resources
  • best long-term outcomes
  • Addresses the root causes of crime and sets things up so crime will not occur in the first place
  • E.g. know that well over 60% of kids with FASD will commit crimes, stop a woman from drinking while pregnant to in the future prevent her child from having FASD, resulting in one less potential criminal

Q

problems with risk

A
  1. human beings are risk averse

Q

good lives model (GLM)

A
  • The GLM is a holistic approach, centred around human rights to dealing with crime
  • People can live a good life after punishment
  • Everyone has valued and should have an opportunity to change
  • Focuses less on punishment and more on rehabilitation and reintegration
  • has 11 primary goods/desired states
17
Q

Retributive Justice

A

a system of justice based on the punishment of offenders far more than the rehabilitation of offenders.

18
Q

Restorative Justice

A

a system of justice which focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims and the community at large
