Group
Three or more people who interact over time, are interdependent, and follow shared rules of conduct to reach a common goal. The team is one type of group
Team
A special kind of group characterized by different and complementary resources of members and a strong sense of collective identity. All teams are groups, but not all groups are teams
Group Limitations
Time(Longer decision times, however its decision may outweigh the disadvantage of time), Conformity Pressures(Supress individuals, and encourage conformity. pressures can arise if a popular person sways the majority of the group. effective groups recognize and resisit conformity pressures), Reduced individial responsbility (social loafing, when a member does not play there part well in a group)
Social Loafing
Exists when members of a group exert less effort than they would if they worked alone
Strengths of Groups
Greater resources, thoroughness (check and balance system, synergy), creativity, and commitment
Synergy
Collaborative vitality that enhances the efforts, talents, and strengths of individual members.
Cohesion
the degree of closeness of the group; esprit de corps
Groupthink
a process in which members cease to think critically and independently about ideas generated by the group
norms
Informal rules that guide how members of a group or culture think, feel, act, and interact. Norms define what is normal or appropriate in various situations
features or groups that affect communication
Cohesion, size, power structure, interation patterns, and norms
Four kinds of group communication
Task communication, Procedural communication, Climate communication, Egocentric communication
Task communication
focuses on problems, issues, or information before a group. provides ideas ensured understanding.
Procedual communication
helps a group stay on track and get organized. establish agenda
Climate communication
focuses on creating and sustaining an open, engaged atmosphere for discussion
Egocentric communication
An unconstructive form of group contribution that blocks others or calls attention to oneself
