Indians not taxed
A phrase used in the constitution to exclude Native Americans from being counted in the census. It indirectly affirmed native nations sovereignty, and denied natives US citizenship.
Alien and Sedition Acts
For federal laws passed in 1798 during an undeclared war with France that limited the freedom of speech and press and restricted the liberty of non-citizens
Separation of powers
A political theory, calling for division of the powers of government, among three separate branches (executive legislative and judicial) which intern check and balance, one another
Judiciary Act of 1801
Passed by the atoms administration prior to leaving office the act sought to place numerous federalist judges, sometimes called the midnight judges on federal courts for lifetime appointments in 1803 the judiciary act was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court
Marbury v. Madison
 The 1803 court decision granting the Supreme Court, the power of judicial review that is the ability to deem laws passed by Congress as constitutional
Judicial Review
The power of the Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of laws established in the Marbury versus Madison decision
Empire of Liberty
 Thomas Jeffersons view for the United States, which he believed, should continue to expand territorially as an ever-growing union of self governing republics
Cotton gin
A hand operated machine patented by Eli Whitney in 1794 that quickly removed seeds from cotton balls, enabling the mass production of cotton in 19th century America
Louisiana Purchase
President Thomas Jefferson, purchase of the Louisiana territory from France for $15 million doubling the size of US territorial claims
Embargo Act
In 1807 law promoted by President Thomas Jefferson, prohibiting American ships from leaving for foreign ports in order to safeguard them from British and French attacks disband on American exports, proved disasters for the US economy
War of 1812
A conflict for in North America and Etsy between great Britain and the United States over American shipping rates and British efforts to spurt Indiana tax on American settlements. Canadians and Native Americans also fought in the war.
Creek War
A conflict along the gulf coast between one faction of the creek, nation, and American forces
Tecumseh’s War
A conflict in the Indiana territory for control of the Great Lakes region, led by the Shawnee chief and warrior Tecumseh
Cherokee Nation
An indigenous nation, native to present day, Georgia, and parts of Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina, reflecting the effects of President Thomas Jefferson’s land policy on native nations, internal conflicts, a rose, went to Cherokee men sold millions of acres of land in Tennessee to the federal government. All others resisted removal from the eastern lands.
Hartford Convention
Hey series of secret meetings in December 18 14 in January 1815 at which New England federalists protested American involvement in the war of 1812 and discuss several constitutional amendments including limiting presidents to one term designed to weaken the dominant republican party
