Chapter 7 - Vocab Flashcards
vestibular portion
houses the sense organs of equilibrium (balance)
cochlear portion
houses the sense organ for hearing
oval window
separates the inner ear from the middle ear
utricle and saccule
membranous sacs; surrounded by perilymph; contain endolymph
semicircular canals
arise from the utricle and return via the ampullae; contain endolymph
ampulla
end organ for the sense of equilibrium
scala vestibuli
extends from the oval window to the helicotrema; contains perilymph
scala tympani
extends from round window to helicotrema; contain perilymph
scala media
central duct; contains endolymph
reissner’s membrane
separates the scala media from the scala vestibuli
basilar membrane
separates the scala media from the scala tympani
stria vascularis
produces endolymph and supplies blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the cochlea; sits on spiral ligament
spiral ligament
provides support for the scala media
organ of corti
sense organ of hearing; sits on the basilar membrane
traveling wave
travels from base to apex (toward helicotrema); frequency of vibration is the stimulus frequency; amplitude of vibration increases as the stimulus intensity increases
