Chapter 6 - Vocab Flashcards
Anatomy
The study of structure; form
Physiology
The process or job performed by an anatomical structure; function
Transverse plane
Top and bottom
Saggital plane
Left and right
Coronal (frontal) plane
Front and back
Superior
Towards the top
Inferior
Towards the bottom
Anterior
Towards the front
Posterior
Towards the back
Lateral (distal)
Towards the side
Medial (proximal)
Towards the midline
Impedance
Opposition to the flow of sound
Afferent
Signal travels up
Efferent
Signal travels down
Pinna (auricle)
Visible portion of the ear, primary made of cartilage
External auditory meatus
Opening in the pinna that leads to the canal
Ear canal
Leads to the tympanic membrane, 2-3 cm in length
Epitheleal migration
skin growth in the ear canal moves outward; heals minor injuries and transports cerumen out of the EAM
Umbo
region of maximum concavity
Pars tensa
lower portion of TM where fibers are dense; is effective in transmitting sound
Pars flaccida
upper portion of TM where fibers are more sparse; doesn’t transmit sound well
Annulus
fibrous ring around the outside of the TM
cone of light (reflection)
due to the concave shape of the TM; lack of it may indicate increased ME pressure or otitis media
Head related transfer functions
how the torso, head, and pinna change the amplitudes and phases of the originating sound; they selectively attenuate and boost certain frequencies (generally boost around 2000-7000 Hz)
