Chapter 7 The Visual System Flashcards
Retinal-Geniculate-Calcarine pathway
-Important for perception of the form, color, location, and motion of visual stimuli
Midbrain pathway
-Important in voluntary and reflexive control of the eyes
Photoreceptors
Rods
-Contain photopigment rhodopsin
-Low light conditions, night vision
Cones
-Contain photopigments for color vision
Ganglion Cell
-Synapse in the thalamus and the brain stem
(visual pathway also contains interneurons)
What is above and below the Lateral Geniculate nucleus (thalamic nuclei)
-Cuneate above
-Lingual gyrus below
Visual Field to Visual Cortex
-Right visual field -> left side of retina -> left hemisphere
-Left visual field -> right side of retina -> right hemisphere
Optic Chiasm
-Cross over/decussation of axons
3 Components of Primary visual cortex
-Cuneus
-Calcarine sulcus
-Lingual gyrus
Dorsal stream
-“Where” pathway involving spatial localization and action
Ventral stream
-“What” pathway involving object recognition
Where does “Where” pathway project to?
Posterior parietal cortex
Where does “What” pathway project to?
Inferior temporal lobe
