Who were the Puritans?
The puritans were extreme protestant who believed in a simple and pure form of worship
Puritans opinion on the role of Bishops?
Puritans opposed Bishops and believed it was The Pope trying to maintain control
What were the three types of Puritans?
Moderate Puritans
Presbyterians
Separatists
What were moderate Puritans?
Puritans who accepted the religious settlement but continued to call for further reform
Who were presbyterians?
They wanted further reform, to abolish bishops and for each church to be run by elected Presbyters (an elder or teacher).
Who were Separatists?
The most radical Puritans. They wanted to break from the national church and for each church to independently run its own parish. They’re also known as ‘brownists’
What were the proposals made by Thomas Cartwright?
Abolition of the bishops and archbishop
Each individual church should be ruled by elected ministers
What was the Vestments controversy of 1566?
Priests that refused to wear the vestments as they were to similar to old catholic clothing
What are the Marprelate Tracts
A serious of anonymous pro-puritan pamphlets that bitterly attacked the church and its bishops. It also offended many people as it contained violent and sarcastic language opposite to Puritan attitudes.
