CHAPTER 7; STUDIES OF COGNITIVE PROCESSES Flashcards
What is Aphasia?
the impairment of language caused by damage to the brain (usually stoke)
What is Broca’s aphasia?
a result from damage to the Broca’s area and often surrounding areas that leads to difficulty in expressing messages in words or sentences but the ability to comprehend speech is largely unaffected.
What is Wernicke’s Aphasia?
results from damage to Wernicke’s area, that causes difficulty in understanding written and spoken language that makes sense to others. Speech is fluent but does not make sense.
What is the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response?
an emergency system which becomes active when the organism perceives itself to be in danger or in times of stress. It readies the body for action, such as running away, fighting the threat, remaining (freezing).
What are cognitive processes?
include those mental processes involved in acquiring, retaining and using knowledge.
What is anomia?
partial or complete loss of the ability to recall names
What is agrammatism?
verbal communication that lacks grammar (wernicke’s aphasia)
What is spatial neglect?
a disorder in which the person is affected systematically ignores stimuli on one side of their body. Usually occurs after brain damage.
What is Anosognosia?
a condition in which the person is blissfully unaware that they suffer from a serious condition (usually as a result of brain damage)
What is Anosodiaphoria?
a condition which the person knows that they suffer from a serious condition (usually as a result of brain damage), but is not concerned about it.
What happens to patients undergoing commisurotomy surgery?
The corpus callosum is severed, to prevent communication between the left and right hemispheres on higher cortical levels.
