What are the five main types of anxiety disorders?
Generalised anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
What is a Phobia?
A phobia is a persistent, irrational and intense fear of a particular object or event.
What is Social phobia?
Social phobia can involve a fear of other people or social situations. This includes the fear of being scrutinised by others while eating, speaking in public or attending a party.
What is Specific Phobia?
Specific phobia is fear of a single object or event that triggers a panic response.
What is Agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is a fear of leaving a familiar place such as home.
What are the four main types of specific phobia?
- animal phobias
- natural environmental phobias
- situation phobias
- blood-injection-injury phobia
What age range do most anxiety disorders appear?
Usually early on in life, from young adolescence to early adulthood.
What is the role of the Amygdala in specific phobia formation?
The amygdala plays a critical role in anxiety disorders as it is part of the limbic system and is vital in initiating and processing emoitional responses such as fear and anxiety and forming emotional memories.
What is the role of the Hippocampus in specific phobia formation?
The frightening event itself is consolidated by the hippocampus so that the person has a conscious recollection of the frightening event.
What is the GABA?
The Gamma-amino butyric acid.
What is the Psychodynamic Model?
The Psychodynamic Model proposes that the development of phobias is due to unresolved conflicts that arise during the phallic stage of a child’s development.
