What is recall?
the retrieval of stored information using minimal cues.
What is free recall?
retrieval of as much information as possible in any order.
What is serial recall?
recalling information in the order in which it was presented.
What is cued recall?
using variations of prompts to assist the retrieval process.
What is recognition?
the identification of the correct information among a list of incorrect pieces of information. e.g. multiple choice questions.
What is relearning?
learning again something that has previously been committed to memory, is easier than learning something for the first time.
What are verbal mnemonics?
acronyms, acrostics and narrative chaining.
What is an acronym?
a word of pronounceable syllable made up of the first letters of the items we are trying to remember or the words in a phrase we are trying to remember. e.g. ANZAC; Australian and New Zealand Army Corp, QANTAS; Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service.
What is an acrostic?
A phrase, rhyme or poem which the first letter of each word serves as a cue to help you retrieve a word or idea that begins with the same letter. e.g. Never Eat Soggy Weetbix = North, East, South, West.
What is a Narrative Chaining?
A series of items or terms that are to be remembered, that are incorporated into a story.
