Chapter 7 Pesticides In The Environment Flashcards
1
Q
How to prevent pesticide drift
A
- can avoid most spray drift problems by paying close attention to spray droplet size, wind direction and wind speed
- Thickness of the liquid also affect droplet size
~ thickness increase so does droplet size thus reducing the chance of off-target movement - Spraying when wind speed is between 3 to 10 mph
- Spraying downwind form sensitive areas
- Using proper nozzles and pressures
- Using drift control additive (if appropriate)
- Lowering boom height
- leaving an untreated border or buffer area in the downwind target area
2
Q
How to prevent runoff
A
- use IPM principles
- Identify vulnerable area
- do not mix and load near water
- Keep pesticides away from wells
- Select products wisely
- Time pesticide applications according to the weather forecast
3
Q
Identify sensitive areas that could be harmful by pesticides
A
- habitats of endangered species
- Areas where domestic animals and livestock are kept
- School grounds, playgrounds and recreational areas
