Chapter 7- networks and nanomaterials Flashcards
1
Q
What is a covalent network lattice?
A
It is a three-dimensional network lattice where atoms are covalently bonded to each other.
2
Q
What are the properties of covalent network lattices?
A
- Exist as solids with high melting points due to the strong covalent bonds between atoms
- do not conduct electricity
- chemically inert
- hard and inert
- insoluble in water
3
Q
What are covalent layer lattices?
A
Covalent layer lattices are made up of many atoms held strongly in two dimensional layers by covalent bonds. These layers are held together by weak dispersion forces.
4
Q
What are the properties of covalent layer lattices?
A
- is solid with high melting point
- conducts electricity
- is slippery due to weak dispersion forces
- metallic sheen due to the interaction between light and delocalised electrons
