Chapter 6- covalent bonding Flashcards
What is a a covalent molecular substance?
Covalent molecular substances are held together by covalent bonds, these substances are made up of molecules
What is a molecule?
A molecules is a seperate group of non-metallic atoms held together by covalent bonds
What are covalent bonds?
Covalent bonds are produced when on-metallic atoms react together, sharing pairs of electrons so that each have an outer shell with 8 electrons
What are examples of non polar covalent bond structures?
Linear
tetrahedral
planar
What are examples of polar covalent bond structures?
Pyramidal
v-shaped
When are bond dipoles made?
When atoms with different electronegativities bond a bond dipole is formed
What are the three intermolecular forces and when are they produced?
- Dispersion forces (all atoms/molecules)
- dipole-dipole interactions (only polar discrete molecules)
- hydrogen bonding (when hydrogen bonds with fluorine, oxygen or nitrogen)
