What is schizophrenia?
Mental illness that impairs perception and expression of reality, must be ongoing for 6 months
Positive symptoms of schizophrenia
Delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized behavior
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia
Affective flattening, alogia, avolition
What is a delusion?
A false belief that involves misinterpretation of perceptions or experiences.
What is a bizarre delusion?
A delusion that is implausible
What is a hallucination?
Perception in the absence of stimulus can involve auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory, tactile
Delusional disorder
Delusions that last at least 1 month
Mood disorders
Depressive, manic, or hypomaniac episodes
What is a depressive episode?
2 week depressed period
What is a manic episode
Elevated mood for 1+ week with 3 symptoms
Hypomaniac episode
Elevated mood for 4+ days 3 symptoms
Major depressive disorder
5 symptoms, no history of manic or hypomaniac episodes
Is major depressive disorder strongly linked to crime?
Yes
Bipolar 1
1+ manic episodes, often having hypomaniac or depressive episodes
Bipolar 2
1 major depressive episode and 1+ hypomaniac episodes
Personality disorder
Pattern of inner behaviour that deviates from culture
What must 2 change of in a personality disorder
Cognition, affectivity, interpersonal functioning, impulse control
3 groups of personality disorders
A) odd and eccentric: paranoid, schizoid
B) dramatic: antisocial, bpd, narcissistic
C) anxious: avoidant, ocd
