Memory of a specific event
Episodic memory
Events so important we remember every detail (birthday, wedding)
Flashbulb memory
General info that we know (ABCS)
Semantic memory
Things that are clearly stated (riding a bike)
Explicit memories
Not clearly stated; including practiced skills and learned habits
Implicit memory
Translation of information into a form in which it can be used
Encoding
Form mental pictures
Visual codes
Using sounds to remember
Acoustic codes
Making sense out of of something (try to find meaning)
Semantic codes
Maintenance of encoded information over time
Storage
Mechanical or rote repetition of info to keep from forgetting it
Maintenance rehearsal
Relate new information to something you already know
Elaborative rehearsal
Filing system used to arrange learned info for later retrieval
Organizational systems
Information filed incorrectly; hard to retrieve it when you need it
Filing errors
Locating stored info and returning it to conscious thought
Retrieval
Memories that come back to you in the place where they took place
Context-Dependent Memory
Memories that return because of the mood you’re in (happy=Christmas)
State-Dependent Memory
Feeling that you know something but you just can’t retrieve it
