Chapter 7.- Mass Movement Flashcards
Give five examples of evidence of soil creep
5 examples of evidence of soil creep are:
-fences and trees bend downhill
- there are cracks appearing in the road
- terracettes are formed- natural steps formed on slope
- walls collapse because of pressure building up behind them from soil moving downhill.
- soil creep is faster at surface and slower deeper down.
What is a landslide?
Its a rapid movement of loose rock and soil down a slope. They are caused by undercutting (wearing away of material at base), coastal erosion and earthquakes. Heavy rain can lead to landslides by loosening up the soil.
They can cause great harm. Buildings such as houses, churches and schools can be buried by the landslide. Many people can be killed and roads can be blocked so rescuers can find it difficult to help.
What is a soil creep?
It is a very slow movement of soil, about 1cm per year. Its the slowest form of movement.
Water and gravity cause soil to move slowly downhill. This movement is shown on features on surface.
