Chapter 4.- Volcanoes Flashcards
How do volcanoes impact on human activities
Advantages of volcanoes / constructive effects
- fertile soil is created from breakdown of lava. E.G. Mount Vesuvius
- Geothermal springs provide hot water and central heating e.g Iceland
- new land formed e.g Hawaii
- tourist visit volcanoes or towns destroyed by volcanoes. E.g Pompeii
Disadvantages of volcanoes / deconstructive affects
- many killed and town and cities destroyed
- farming land destroyed
- lahars- rivers of mud- can cause great damage
Icelandic ash cloud - distribution of air travel
What Are the features of volcanic mountains
The features of volcanic mountains are:
~ crater: The mouth of the volcano from which lava, ash, cinder and gases escape
~ vent: The crack in the surface of the ground from which the volcano emerges
~ the magma chamber (or reservoir) is down in the mantle. the lava/magma comes from here
~ magma: the molten rock while it is under the ground
~ ash, cinder and gas are thrown out during an eruption
~ Lava: the molten rick when it is above the surface
~ secondary volcano: a smaller volcano that breaks out on the side of a larger volcano
