Chapter 7: Laws of Motion and Momentum Flashcards
what is newton’s first law
a resultant force is necessary to change the state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line in a body.
what is newton’s second law
when body A exerts a force on body B then body B exerts a force on body A that is equal, opposite in direction and of the same type
what is newton’s third law
the rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and is in the same direction as the force
what is the conservation of momentum
in any direction in the absence of external forces the total momentum remains constant
what is the momentum equation
M = m x v Momentum = mass x velocity
what is the unit momentum is measured in
kgms^-1
what is an inelastic collision
collision where momentum is conserved but KE is lost
what is an elastic collision
collision where momentum and KE are conserved
what is the force acceleration equation
F = m x a Force = mass x acceleration
what is the force momentum equation
F = k [(mv - mu) / t] Force = k x [(final momentum - intial momentum) / time]
