Chapter 7 - Immunity Flashcards
immunity
ability to ward off disease
susceptibility
inability to ward off disease (lack of resistance)
innate immunity
from birth
non-specific
no memory
includes 1st and 2nd lines of defense
adaptive immunity
immune response to specific pathogen
slower to respond
memory!
3rd line of defense
macrophages
mature monocytes - found in tissues throughout the body
phagocytic cells
part of innate immunity
B lymphocytes (B cells)
Major cell in humeral immunity
Form and mature in bone marrow
Will turn into plasma cells - produce antibodies
Some will turn into memory cells
T lymphocytes (T cells)
Primary cell in cellular immunity
Form in bone marrow and mature in thymus
Differentiate into different kinds of T cells
antigen
foreign substance that causes the production of antibodies
self = marks cell as part of the body; immune system ignores
non-self = marks cell as foreign; causes immune response
