Chapter 26 - Stress and Associated Problems Flashcards
Stressor
Any factor that creates a significant change in the body or environment
Can be physical or psychological
Can be internal or external
Distress
Harmful effects that result from body’s inability to appropriately deal with stress
Maladaption
When body’s adaptive measures to stress are not sufficient
Goal of the stress response
To increase organ function
General Adaptation Syndrome
The body’s response to stressors
Three stages of the general adaptation syndrome
Alarm
Resistance
Exhaustion
Alarm stage
Body’s defenses mobilized
Resistance stage
Hormone levels elevated
Body systems functioning at peak performance
Exhaustion stage
Body is unable to respond to stimuli
Stress response of the adrenal medulla
Increased secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine
Vasoconstriction (skin and viscera)
Vasodilation (skeletal muscle)
Increased blood pressure
Stress response of adrenal cortex
Increased secretion of cortisol Increased protein metabolism Increased blood glucose levels Decreased immune response Decreased inflammatory response
Possible results of prolonged vasoconstriction
Necrosis of GI tract Necrosis of kidneys - renal failure Stress ulcers Stomatitis Slowed healing (glucocorticoids also decrease cellular regeneration)
Steps in coping with stress
Recognize stressors in your life
Get rid of stressor OR find proper coping mechanism
