Chapter 7: Energy Resources Flashcards
What is a non-renewable resource?
A non-renewable energy is one which cannot be replaced once it has run out.
Renewable resources include…
Wind power, wave power, tidal power, hydroelectric power, geothermal power, solar heating, photovoltaic cells
Non-renewable sources include
Coal, oil, gas, nuclear power, biomass
What is a renewable resource?
A renewable energy resource is one which will not run out.
Name two advantages of hydroelectric power
No fuel is needed, and it can be made on demand.
Name two advantages of solar power
You can make your own electricity, meaning left over can be used as a source on income. Doesn’t release any harmful gases
Name two advantages of wind power
Can be installed offshore, and no fuel is needed
Name two advantages of tidal power
Predictable source, can double up as protection against flooding
Name two advantages of wave power
No waste products, no harmful gases released
Name two advantages of geothermal power
The hot water produced can also be used to heat homes, and it is not dependent on weather conditions
Name an advantage of biogas
Uses waste products - biodegradable matter
Name two advantages of coal, oil and gas
Creates lots of jobs, cheap
Name two advantages of nuclear power
For the amount of fuel used, a lot of electricity can be produced and it is clean.
Name two common advantages to renewable sources of electricity.
No fuel is needed and they are clean
Name two disadvantages of hydroelectric power
Takes up lots of space and could cause flooding
