Chapter 7 (Darwinian Evolution) - 7.9, 7.12, 7.13 Flashcards
What are the four major eras in the geologic record and what is the date range for each?
1) Precambrian: 4.6 bya - 541 mya
2) Paleozoic: 541 mya - 251 mya
3) Mesozoic: 251 mya - 65 mya
4) Cenozoic: 65 mya - Present
What major events occurred during the Precambrian Era and approximately when does each occur?
1) Earth Forms - 4.6 bya
2) Oldest Known Prokaryote Fossils - 3.5 bya
3) Oldest Known Eukaryote Fossils - 2.1 bya
What are the six periods in the Paleozoic Era?
1) Cambrian
2) Ordovician
3) Silurian
4) Devonian
5) Carboniferous
6) Permian
What major events occurred during the Paleozoic Era and approximately when does each occur? Also note the Period.
1) Cambrian Explosion and Increase in Animal Diversity - 541 mya - Cambrian Period.
2) Plant Life Begins to Dominate Land - 420 mya - Silurian Period.
3) Animals Migrate to Land - 370 mya - Devonian Period
4) Mass Extinction Event that Wiped Out 90% of all life on earth - 251 mya - Permian Period
What are the three periods of the Mesozoic Era?
1) Triassic
2) Jurassic
3) Cretaceous
What major events occurred during the Mesozoic Era and approximately when does each occur? Also note the period.
1) First Dinosaurs - 230 mya - Triassic Period
2) Flowering Plants Begin to Dominate the Land - 100 mya - Cretaceous Period
What are the two periods of the Cenozoic Era?
1) Tertiary
2) Quaternary
What major events occurred during the Cenozoic Era and when did they occur?
1) Extinction of Dinosaurs and Diversification of mammals - 65 mya - Tertiary Period
2) Appearance of Anatomically Modern Humans - 200,000 years ago - Quaternary Period.
Define tectonic plates.
Irregularly shaped masses of the earth’s crust that float atop the mantle.
Define Mantle.
A very hot layer of rock below the tectonic plates.
What is Pangea?
The one single landmass the all the Continents were a part of 200 mya.
What is taxonomy?
The identification, naming, and classification of species.
What are domains?
The large groups every species can be classified under.
What is the taxonomic hierarchy ordering in terms of broadest to least broad grouping?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What are the Three Domains?
Bacteria, Archea, and Eukarya.
