Chapter 7 - Basics Of Chemistry Flashcards
What is the pH scale and how does it work
Measures the potential hydrogen of a substance to tell the degree of acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14, it is a logarithmic scale so change of one whole number means a tenfold change
Solute vs solvent
Solvent – any substance that dissolves the solute to form a solution
Solute - The substance that is dissolved by the solvent to form a solution
Miscible vs immiscible
Miscible – liquids are mutually soluble
Immiscible – liquids are not mutually soluble
What is a surfactant
It is used to emulsify oil in water to create an emulsion, able to wet the skin and emulsify oil and water
What is an emulsion
Mixtures of two or more immiscible substances united with the aid of an emulsifier, tend to break apart over time but should last at least three years if stored properly
