Chapter 5 - Infection Control Flashcards
What is infection control
Methods used to eliminate or reduce the transmission of infectious organisms
What is cleaning and then disinfecting with an appropriate epa registered disinfectant
Decontamination method 1
What is cleaning and then sterilizing
Decontamination method 2
What does it mean when a pathogen is a harmless organism that may perform a useful function
It’s non pathogenic
Round shaped bacteria that appear singly or in groups
Cocci
Pus forming bacteria that grow in clusters like bunches of grapes
Staphylococci
Pus forming bacteria arranged in curved lines resembling a string of beads
Streptococci
Spherical bacteria that grow in pairs
Diplococci
Short rod shaped bacteria
Bacilli
Spiral or cork screw shaped bacteria
Spirilla
What is saprophytes
A plant, fungus, or microorganism that lives on dead or decaying organic matter
What is disinfection
The process that eliminates most, but not necessarily all, microorganisms on nonporous surfaces, doesn’t work for bacterial spores
What is sanitation
A chemical process for reducing the number of disease causing germs on cleaned surfaces to a safe level
What is sterilization
The process that completely destroys all microbial life including spores
What does pathogenic mean
Harmful microorganisms that cause disease or infection in humans when they invade the body
