Chapter 7:7 Flashcards
Lacrimal glands
In the eye produce tears, which constantly moisten and cleanse the eyes
The Eye
Organ that controls the special sense of sight
Conjunctiva
Mucous membrane covering front of eye
Sclera
Tough outermost layer of eye
Cornea
Circular transparent part of the front of the sclera.
Allows light rays to enter the eye
Choroid Coat
Middle layer if the eye,
interlaced with many blood vessels that nourish the eyes
Retina
Innermost layer of the eye made of many layers of nerve cells
Iris
Colored portion of the eye
Pupil
Opening in center of Iris
Lens
Circular structure located behind pupil
Refracts
(Bends) light rays so the rays focus on the retina
Aqueous humor
Watery fluid between cornea and Iris
Vitreous humor
Jellylike substance behind lens
Pinna ( auricle)
Visible part of the ear
Auditory canal
External auditory or meatus
Cerumen
Wax that protects the ear
The ear
Organ that controls the special senses of hearing and balance
Divided into three main sections
1. Outer ear
- Middle ear
- Inner ear
Tympanic membrane
Eardrum, vibrates with sound waves
Separates the outer ear from the middle ear
The middle ear
Small space or cavity in the temporal bone
Ossicles
Three small bones in middle ear
Eustachian tube
Equalizes air pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane
The Inner ear
Most complex portion of the ear
Separated from the middle ear by a membrane called oval window
Vestibule
First section of inner ear that acts as an entrance to the other two parts
Cochlea
Shaped like a snails she’ll, contains delicate hairlike cells, which compose the organ of Corti
Organ of Corti
Receptor for sound waves
Semicircular canals
Structure in inner ear that sends impulses for balance and equilibrium
Cones
Used for vision when it’s light
Hyperopia
Is farsightedness
Conduction deafness occurs when
Sound waves are not conducted to the inner ear
