What is the definition of legislation and regulations?
The recycling and disposal of digital devices needs to comply with the Data Protection Act, the Environmental Act and the WEEE EU directive.
What is the definition of secure data disposal?
Secure data disposal using physical destruction of the hard dish or using data destruction software to overwrite the entire hard disk with random data.
What is the definition of equipment recycling and disposal?
Digital equipment can be disposed of by trading it in, donating it, selling it or using a specialist computer disposal company.
What does the Waste Electrical and Electronic Directive 2013 (WEEE) do?
It applies EU regulations to encourage organisations to recycle materials.
What does the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) do?
It removes personal data from equipment before dumping or recycling.
What does the Environmental Act 1995 do?
It’s responsible for the disposal of hazardous materials.
How do you remove data from digital devices before recycling or disposal?
- Back up data
- Permanently delete data
- Dispose of/recycle
Explain what happens to data when it is deleted?
Data is NOT permanently deleted from the hard disk when files are deleted or even when the hard disk is reformatted.
How can data be permanently deleted?
- Physical destruction (crushing to make it unusable)
- It’s now worthless and makes an environmental impact
- Data destruction software (overwrites hard disk)
- The hard drive can be reused
- Mobile data deleted by ‘factory reset’
What do you need to ensure when it comes to selling or donating digital devices?
You need to ensure that the devices have their data removed and they will need to spend time on resources on that.
Who is responsible for trading in equipment?
The supplier is responsible for equipment disposal and may get an allowance towards new equipment.
What do specialist disposal do?
They permanently delete data of hard disks. They break down equipment to be recycled. They also safely dispose of hazardous waste and they dispose batteries
