Chapter 1 Flashcards
How can infrared technology be used in PL?
It can be used for:
- Personal headsets (for TV)
- Remote controllers (set up TV)
- File transfer communication (staff to members)
- Laptop peripherals (infrared mice)
What are the benefits of infrared technology?
Benefits:
- Lower power usage (ideal for mobiles etc)
- High security (very unlikely to be intercepted)
- Low interference (high-quality sound)
What are the limitations of infrared technology?
Limitations:
- Line of sight (transmitter and receiver to be aligned)
- Limited range (decreases above 5 metres)
- Low speed (compared to wired transmissions
What is the definition of infrared technology?
Infrared technology is a wireless technology that operates over a short range and cannot penetrate through walls and other obstructions.
What is the definition of bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a wireless technology that permits wireless connection between electronic devices over short distances.
How do you pair bluetooth devices?
- Put device on discovery mode
- A list of discoverable devices in range will appear
- Connect the required device (sometimes entering PIN)
How can bluetooth be used in PL?
It can be used for:
- Synchronising data
- Wearable heart rate monitors
- Linking peripherals to mobile devices
What are the benefits of bluetooth?
Benefits:
- Low power usage (idea for battery-operated devices)
- Automatic connection (once devices have been paired)
What are the limitations of bluetooth?
Limitations:
- Battery life can be reduced (continually using)
- Signal speed (lower than Wi-Fi and infrared)
What is the definition of Wi-Fi technology?
Wi-Fi is a technology that permits wireless connection between electronic devices to share data or to access the internet.
What is the definition of LAN?
A LAN or local area network operates over a small area such as a single building or group of buildings.
What can Wi-Fi be used for in PL?
It can be used for:
- Personal use (social media etc)
- Member profile (check attendance, book classes etc)
- Progress Leisure website (browsing, videos, contacting)
What are the benefits of Wi-Fi?
Benefits:
- No cables needed (wired set ups are impractical)
- Network connections can be saved and set to connect automatically
How does Wi-Fi work?
- Mobile device translates data into radio signals and transmits then using an antenna
- The wireless router accepts the radio signal and decodes it
- The router then directs the decoded information to the network/internet using a wired connection
