Integumentary System
Both a membrane (covers body) and an organ (contains several kinds of tissues)
Covers more than 3,000 sq. in. of surface area; 15% of total body weight.
Epidermis
Outermost layer of skin; made of 5 smaller layers but contains no blood vessels or nerve cells
Dermis
AKA Corium or true skin
Sudoriferous glands
sweat glands
sebaceous glands
Oil glands that open into hair follicles
Produce sebum, an oil that keeps skin and hair from becoming dry and brittle
Subcutaneous fascia or hypodermis
Innermost layer

Melanin
Brownish black pigment produced in the epidermis
Carotene
Yellowish red pigment
Albino
Absence of color pigments
Jaundice
Yellow discoloration of the skin; can indicate bile in the blood
Erythema
Reddish color of the skin that can be caused by burns or congestion of blood vessels.
Cyanosis
Bluish discoloration of the skin caused by insufficient oxygen
Macules
flat spots on the skin, e.g. freckles
papules
firm, raised areas. e.g. pimples
