Chapter 7:5 Muscular System Flashcards
4 functions of the muscular system
Excitability- ability of muscles to respond to a stimulus
Contractibility- muscle fibers become short and thick
Extensibility- ability of muscles to be stretched
Elasticity-
Fascia
Tough sheetlike membrane that covers and protects the tissue
Origin
When muscle is attached to a bone, the end that doesn’t move
Insertion
The end that moves when the muscle contract
Fibromyalgia
Chronic, widespread pain in specific muscle sites
Muscular Dystrophy
Group of inherited diseases that lead to chronic, progressive muscle atrophy.
Myasthenia Gravis
Chronic condition where nerve impulses are not properly transmitted to the muscles
Three main kinds of muscle
Cardiac, visceral, skeletal
Visceral muscle
AKA smooth muscle, found in internal organs of the body such as digestive and respiratory system; contract to cause movement in organs
Involuntary muscle
Function without conscious thought or control; cardiac and visceral muscles
Skeletal muscle
Attached to bones and cause body movement
Voluntary muscle
Person has control over its actions
Tendons
Strong, tough, fibrous connective tissue cords.
