Chapter 7 Flashcards
Information Process
The way individulas take in, store, and use info
Encoding
Processing of info (just taking it in) Recording info
Retrieval
info is located, brought to awareness, and used.
Three System Approach
- Sensory
- Short-term Memory
- Long-term Memory
sensory is encoded into short-term
short-term is stored in long-term
Sensory
Senses intial and momentarly stored
Short-term Memory
Short duration and limited capacity
Long-term Memory
Relatively permanent and functions with the Retrivel process
Chunking
putting items into meaningful groups to help us remember
Metamemory
meta-your own
understanding and knowlegde we have about memory process
Mental Strategies
used to transform info so that we will retain it and use it
Mnemonics
strategies for organizing material in ways for it to be remembered
Recall
active retrieval without cues
Scripts
general memory of a sequence of events
driving to school everyday
Central Excecutive
a part of working memory that directs the flow of info
directs attention, maintains goals, decision makes, and memory retrieval
Attention
strategically chose between and sort out different stimuli in enviroment (what you are focused on)
Working memory
A set of temporary memory stores that actively manipulate and rehearse info
