Chapter 7 Flashcards
What is the cell membrane composed of?
Phospholipid Bilayer
Which part of the bilayer is hydrophilic?
Phosphate Heads
What part of the bilayer is hydrophobic?
Fatty Acid Tails
Four functions of the Cell Membrane
Cell Signaling,
Selective Transport,
Excretion of Wastes,
Structural Support
What is the integral protein?
A protein that goes all of the way through the cell, helps transport certain materials across the cell membrane.
What is function of cholesterol in the cell membrane?
Maintains flexibility of the membrane
Where are peripheral proteins found?
On the outside of the cell.
Structure most responsible for maintaining homeostasis:
Cell membrane.
Passive Transport
Can move small molecules in/out of cells, from a high concentration area to a low concentration area.
Doesn’t use protein doorway.
Active Transport
Can move large/small molecules in/out of cells from low centration areas. Can use the protein doorway.
Diffusion
Form of Passive Transport. Moves from high to low concentration areas until equilibrium is reached.
Osmosis
Form of Passive Transport, focuses on water and solutes. High concentration to low concentration of water, vice versa for solutes.
Endocytosis
Form of Active Transport, moves large/small molecules INTO cells.
Exocytosis
Form of Active Transport, moves large/small molecules OUT OF cells.
Define “selectively permeable”
some substances can pass through and others cannot
